Painting for me is about spontaneity and play. I start a work with a wash of color, brushed ,, poured or sponged onto the surface. Afterwards different colors will be spattered or dripped onto the painting. This beginning is always suggestive of rich possibilities. I don't like to question the process. I let my inner emotions dictate the progression of the work. A sense of play is always apparent in my work. I "play" with the shapes, colors, patterns and linear elements. There is usually a point at which the whole seems ready to unravel, and then at the last moment I add an element that creates harmony and the piece is finished. This sense of bringing a painting to the brink of chaos and then "rescuing" it is very exciting for me. When a piece does not work I destroy it and use the cut-up pieces for collage to use on another painting. I have always loved collaging, placing an element from another piece onto a new work and seeing the richness this provides.
For the last several years I have also made monotypes. The use of mylar stencils in these prints opened up new possibilities in the paintings just as the wall constructions I made in the eighties and nineties deeply influenced the paintings that came after. Although the work has changed over the years my approach has stayed constant. The joy of starting each piece as a new adventure, letting accidents happen and reveling in the sheer joy of painting is always with me.
