From the Studio: Part 1 Agnes Jacobs An exhibition based on never before exhibited paintings, works on paper & monotypes January 3 to January 26, 2008
Agnes Jacobs, Cornstalk, 38 x 50, acrylic on paper, 2007 It happens in the life of a painting that it may be created by an artist between major exhibitions. When the time for exhibition arrives these works are often considered by the artist or dealer the wrong color, theme, style etc. to fit into the upcoming exhibition. Very beautiful paintings end up never being seen by the public or the critics in this way. Although both Ms Jacobs is scheduled for a major show later in the year, she was kind enough to allow me to curate these shows out of their studios. Some of these works are brand new; others are seasoned by a few years. Agnes Jacobs lived in Washington, DC for the majority of her adult life still enjoys a fine art career there, although she now lives in New York. This will be the second time our gallery has shown her work. Since meeting Jacobs we have worked with her on a series of monotypes, the influence of these monotypes is strongly reflected in the works we are now showing. The artist is painting with lush, active, sensual looping strokes combining a 35 year history of art marking with the freshness and energy of instant mark making. In her art one sees the influences of mid-twentieth century abstraction marrying the Asian calligraphic art form. Jacobs enjoys both visual complexity, and simplicity. Her art reflects a joyous almost audible quality.
