Mr. Crull produces layered, richly colored and textured paintings in which passages of brushy smearing and linear scrawling emphasize the surface, while blended areas create spaces of illusory luminosity. Heraldic, alphabetic, geometric, numerological and other kinds of mystically suggestive symbols are woven into the painterly fabric.
