Judith Linhares was born in Pasadena and spent the first part of her career in California. In the early 1980's she made the move to New York and has since been living here. Having gone through abstraction, figuration, and feminist art concerns, her mature art is compared to surrealist and symbolist painters, but whereas those painters are known for their dark side, Linhares' imagery stands out for its humor and optimism. In this magical suite the artist treats us to visions of big cats dealing with life in the circus, flowers in various emotional attitudes, a precarious pagoda, a green fairy tale gnome and one of her favorite themesa mother hen and her chicks. Each image has the capacity to go straight to the inner awareness of the viewer. When asked why she paints what she paints, the artist responded, "I just have to paint what I paint." The images come from the same part of the artist's mind as from the viewer's which receives them. Linhares works with the spontaneity that comes from strongly felt emotion for her subject and extensive knowledge about picture making. She has control of the imagery and formal elements in her work. Her palette juxtaposes strong clear colors with complimentary softer hues, dusty mauve pink with blue and acid greens, sherbet orange and transparent coral with mauve, brilliant orange and black stripes with pale lemony yellow and pearl gray purple. She accents with wine red, turquoise, jade green, teal, and sky blues. This series of images was created using the monotype technique. The artist used oil color and Rives BFK paper and splendidly incorporated the brilliance of the paper with her painting, imbibing the art with freshness and life. |
