The essence of my work is in the age-old concept of a search for the sublime, transcendence and soul. The paintings are created by painting on various Japanese papers with watercolor, ink and other waterbased paints. Then I cut with an x-acto knife or scalpel. The act of painting is fluid and full of exuberance while the cutting process is very time consuming and detailed. The success of both acts requires a focused zen like state and both must contribute to the vitality of the painting or I don't continue. Not all of the paintings "make the cut" so to speak. Although the cutting is the most obsessive part, the work really begins with the mark making. The painting part reflects my mood or state of mind at that moment in time and progresses on to the more time consuming and detailed cutting away of negative space. This seemingly disparate approach allows for the marks to exist in space and time as well as the surface. The very process of the work becomes a meditation toward the merging of spiritual and personal consciousness. It is a physical manifestation of who I am. |
