Spread My Soul
Reception for the artist: Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 6 to 8 PM
Stargazer, 2007, 73 x 78 inches, 2007 Press Release Auguste Rhonda Tymeson Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts is proud to present an exhibition by Auguste Rhonda Tymeson. Ms Tymeson has for many years worked with colored inks, hand made papers and a blade. When we first showed her art in a group show in 2006 her work accented a calligraphic quality. The artist painted swooping and curvaceous lines in multiple colors, then removed the negative space between the numerous strokes, literally, by cutting away the white of the paper. Since that time Tymeson has grown bolder in her vision. Her new works swirl from a central vortex, or seem to travel in clouds of color across the picture plane. Her colors are denser, more intense and sparkling. The linear elements have given way to solid areas of pigment, with drips and splatters built up on the surface. Her knife and blade work has changed as well. The cutting is now almost a counter balance, a melody that runs through, around or plays off of the painting. What started as method has evolved to an intricate artistic intuition that uses multiple compositions and techniques to achieve the whole. Tymeson’s elegant linear quality is still intact, but is now more sensual and in the larger works, wild. The artist pushes the sexiness of line, drip and splat to evoke a sensitive and stimulating object. For this exhibition she has created two sets of long thin works that are named after the chakras. She uses the traditional colors – red, orange, green etc. assigned to the energy centers of Eastern tradition. The color has translucence and each work individually or as a set feels airy and light. In the large works the colors are stronger, more complex and the image is weightier, muscular in a way that is palpable. The blues are almost pure blue pigment, and blacks feel like lacquer. Greens and reds are set off by spots of phosphorus green and pink accordingly. The large works are approximately 76 inch square diptychs. The strong directional quality in some of these pieces causes one to feel they might whirl off the paper. An important quality of Tymeson’s art is the physicality of the object. Created on Okawara papers the works are installed suspended and a bit away from the walls. The effect of the paper’s movement in the air combined with the shadows cast by the cuts creates a second artwork in grisaille that compliments the piece. This effect is carried through in framing the art. All the work for this exhibition is online at our website, with full descriptions. We are very excited about this show and look forward to sharing it with you.
