VALENTINA DUBASKY
CAMBODIAN FLOWER ARCHAEOLOGY

Large Scale Monotypes & One Large Painting

Introducing Cambodian Silk Necklaces - An Art in a Box Project

August 18 to September 12, 2008

Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts is pleased to announce an exhibition of large scale monotypes plus one large painting by Valentina DuBasky. Ms DuBasky is the first artist that we worked with at Pelavin Editions in collaborative monotype and etching projects and we have had a constant working relationship for twenty one years. We also have had the pleasure of placing over 300 of Ms DuBasky’s works on paper. In 1997 when we opened our gallery, Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts, Valentina DuBasky was our natural choice for the inaugural painting exhibition. DuBasky has had four solo shows since that time and we are looking forward to her fifth this winter.

Cambodian Flower Archaeology is series of large works on paper created last summer and although several works from this series have been placed in collections we are very happy to show off one of our own publishing projects by such a beloved artist.

Ms DuBasky has spent over 25 years creating artwork and doing extensive travel which inspires her work. Her early paintings drew upon the European cave drawings depicting herd beasts. It was not long before she ventured into China and from there along the entire silk route. In all of her travels she has visited caves and studied the drawings, or surprisingly, the flowers blossoming there. In her suite of monotypes based on the orchids of India she depicted orchids that have grown in caves over millennia, some of the actual plants being over 500 years old. She has also taught in and come to know the people in the different countries she visits. She works with local historians (re: this projects source), The Crane Foundation, local embassies and others.

For the past three years DuBasky has responded to her own need to give back to the people of these countries. She set up a 501 C3 called Art in a Box, through this foundation she is able to bring the gift of art to children and adults in the countries she visits. Working with local groups to help identify those in need; She introduces creative projects that have ignited a flame of self respect and awareness. A recent project is with women and girls in Cambodia who are creating necklaces out of Cambodian silk. Art in a Box will distribute these beautiful objects. For the moment we are the exclusive outlet for these lustrous personal decorations and there is a gorgeous selection to choose from. Each strand costs $20 and combining strands gives the wearer a stunning and unique accoutrement. All the proceeds go back to the women in Cambodia. Your purchase assists women onto the road of safety and independence in Cambodia.
