The bud of a single flower is placed in a vase. Behind it, directly on the wall, I draw a large charcoal sketch of the flower. Each day I return, erasing and drawing again, stepping back and forth, adjusting my sketch to the changes that have taken place. As the flower stretches and blooms my drawing inevitably becomes denser and darker. Within ten days the flower is completely dead. My erasure remains as its visual history, its afterlife. At this point it is the drawing that blossoms. What began as fairly conventional image making becomes a deep expressive abstraction. Resonant with mortality.
